Ryan Doty '13 enters his fourth season on the Wartburg coaching staff after a successful career as a pitcher and second baseman for the Knights. He was a member of the 2013 Iowa Conference regular-season and conference tournament Championship team.
Doty is the program's all-time leader in strikeouts/nine innings and had 20 wins on the mound in 207.1 innings pitched which ranks tenth-best and ninth-best, respectively on the career leader list. His 2.46 career ERA is fourth-best all-time and he ranks in the top ten in six other career categories. He set the single game school record with 13 strikeouts and accomplished this twice in his career. Doty set the single season record with 104 strikeouts his junior season.
Doty was a three-time All-Conference selection which included being named the Iowa Conference's Pitcher of the Year his senior season. He was a two-time All-Region selection.
Coach Chaplin is in his 15th year as an assistant coach at Wartburg. Casey has been a member of the Wartburg staff during seven Iowa Conference championships and two regional championships, accompanying the Knights on trips to the College World Series in 2000 and 2005. Casey coached Wartburg catchers Matt Thede (two-time all IIAC and former member of Montreal Expo Organization) and Brian Griener (current school record holder in career RBI.)
Chaplin earned his B.A. and M.A. from Buena Vista University , playing baseball from 1990-1993. Chaplin was voted team captain in 1993 and was the leading hitter for the Beavers in 1992. Chaplin was head coach at Galva-Holstein High School (1998, 1999) and Waverly-Shell Rock High School (2001-2004) as well as pitching coach at Buena Vista University (1996-1999). In 2001, Chaplin led Waverly-Shell Rock to their first state baseball tournament appearance in twenty-four years. Chaplin is currently head sophomore football coach at Waverly-Shell Rock.
Chaplin, his wife Angie and their two sons, Jacob and Jeremy, reside in Waverly.
Coach Pirkl '04 enters his sixth season as the pitching coach for the Knights. Jared pitched for the Knights during four consecutive IIAC championships and three NCAA national tournament appearances. Jared has been a member of the Wartburg coaching staff during three Iowa Conference Championships and three NCAA regional tournament appearances.
He brings twelve years of coaching experience and most recently served as the pitching coach at Mount Mercy University from 2010-11. He was an elementary and middle school teacher, as well as, the head baseball coach at Benton Community Schools from 2005-2010. During those five years, Benton was a State Tournament Qualifier in 2009, won one Sub-state Championship, two district Championships and won the WAMAC Championship in 2009. He was nominated for Northeast Iowa District Coach of the Year in 3A in 2008 and 2009. He had a career record at Benton Community of 105 – 75, coached six All-State players, thirteen All-District players and 22 All-Conference players. He also was an assistant varsity boys basketball coach from 2005-2011 and assistant football coach during his time at Benton.
Jared currently teaches sixth grade at Hansen Elementary in Cedar Falls and is working toward a master’s degree in K-8 Science Education through Walden University. He has also been an assistant varsity baseball coach at Waverly-Shell Rock for the past three year. Jared and his wife, Kelly ('04 graduate of Wartburg) reside in Waverly with their sons Carter (6), Ben (4), twins Noah and Will (2).
Coach Carlson '02 enters his seventh season as an assistant coach at Wartburg. He served as the head baseball coach at Don Bosco High School from 2005-2011. During those six seasons, Don Bosco finished as the State Championship Runner-Up, amassed four District Championships, two Sub-State Championships, Two State Tournament appearances and won five Iowa Star Conference titles and went undefeated in conference play in each of those seasons. He was named the Northeast Iowa District Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2008 and was additionally nominated in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011. He has a career record of 172-59 and coached four IAHSCBA Senior All-Star players, eight First-team All-State players, three Second-team All-State players, 17 All-District selections and 24 All-Conference players.
Carlson was named the Wartburg College John Kurtt Alumni Coach of the Year in 2010.
Carlson previously served as the assistant varsity coach at Waverly-Shell Rock High School from 2001-2004 and as the head freshmen/ sophomore and assistant varsity coach at Anamosa High School from 1998-1999.
Carlson is an instructional coach at Sumner-Fredricksburg. He and wife Sonya '04 reside in Waverly with their daughter, Maris (7) and son, Brooks (5).
